2 for 1 Voucher at Nottingham Big Fun Run! Code BFR15ACTIVATE

Big Fun Run series gives people of all abilities the chance to kick start a new, active 2015. Set in 18 of the UK’s most iconic parks from Glasgow to Brighton, the 5k events are aimed at all members of the family, with entry free for children under 5.BFR _A4 Poster_Location_Nottingham-page-001

The emphasis is on fun at the charitable events, where over £200,000 was raised for good causes last year. Oragniser GSi Events, who also host the Edinburgh Marathon and Bournemouth Marathon say: “Each run has a friendly atmosphere whilst offering an achievable challenge “

Big Fun Run Event Director, Neil Kilgour said: “Tens of thousands of people take part in Big Fun Run every year, it attracts people of all shapes, sizes and ages. No event is timed, it is all about having fun and raising funds for a charity close to your heart.

“It is a great event for all the family and it is not unusual to see grandma, mum and daughter all lining up together at the startline. We also have many people taking part in fancy dress to add to the feel good atmosphere.”

Among those set to enter is Karen Marshall who intends to take part in the Victoria Park event in London on Sunday 1st November. “We are running as a family group for our Mum Annie, who has stage 6 Alzheimer’s, giving the money we raise to the Alzheimer Society.” Karen said.

“We are thinking of bringing her on the run with us in her wheelchair and we’ll all, including Mum be wearing our ‘Running for Annie’ T-shirts.” They also took part in last year’s event at the East London venue.

“We had a fabulous day out.” Karen recalls. “We wanted to try to raise some money for the Alzheimer’s Society – Mum loves being outside so we decided to run 5k with the Big Fun Run as a family group.

“We ran with Mum in her wheelchair and she managed to walk over the finish line herself at about the 40 minute mark to huge cheers from the crowds. Everyone was so helpful and supportive. We couldn’t have wished for a better fund raising day and overall a lovely family day out.”

The Big Fun Run events run from July to November, to see all the venues and to find out how to enter, visit www.bigfunrun.com

Have you ever had to take time off work because your regular childcare arrangements broke down?

Perhaps the nursery was shut, your nanny was sick or your regular childminder was on holiday?

Normal childcare arrangements do go wrong. Funnily enough, although the average working parent in the UK will have a childcare breakdown 9 times a year, it’s not something people tend to think about. Until it actually happens.

Emergency Childcare lets you plan ahead for such situations, and when things go wrong, you can book an emergency nanny, nursery or childminder anywhere in the UK with as little as 30 minutes’ notice.

“I need a new….”

Great discounts and extra 10% off too!

We all still remember, and some of us still get, that warm fuzzy feeling of opening a box with a shiny new pair of boots, or unwrapping the cover round a new tennis racket. With the days getting longer and the sun trying to burst through to dry up the rain we are…yes…we are…getting close to the summer!

Not only does the summer bring (hopefully!) sunshine, but it also signals the start of the warmer outdoor sporting season. With the new season comes the need for a new bat, ball, bag, or racket. All parents know what we mean when we hear the drawn out ‘a’ in “Daddy” or ‘u’ in “Mummy” which is closely followed by “I need a new….”

If you want to save then visit our fiends at www.owzat-cricket.co.uk and enter the code OZFLAC10 to receive an extra 10% off your order. All for just being an Activate Sport customer! Not only will you save but you will get great advice and also be able to choose from the best range of equipment and clothing.

Although it hits us parents in the wallet the irony is that we should be buying new gear for the cricket season. “Why?” I hear you scream, well let me explain.

At Activate Sport, and in cricket with our Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, we are all about encouraging children to learn and develop new skills and helping them be inspired to have a passion for cricket. Part of this is being able to achieve some success, see improvement in themselves and willingly accept challenges without fear.

So why does this need the new pair of gloves or pads or bat? Quite simply because it will fit! Using last year’s kit was great for last year while it was the right size but now he/she has grown 6 inches they need a bigger size. Using last year’s bat might now look like a toothpick in their hands!

I hear the lightbulbs flashing already – the answer is to buy big this year so it lasts for 2 years! No – I am afraid that is equally debilitating too. Can you imagine wearing shoes that are too big and expecting to run the same 5k time in them than ones that fit? A bat or pads that are too big can be really damaging to a player’s technique and confidence so the real answer is ‘Buy to fit’.

There are plenty of reasons why your son or daughter wants the latest kit or equipment. Their best mate has got a new bat or they really want the same as their hero who is on the poster in the shop. Some kit can be brought out year after year and last longer (for example a bag which most parents end up carrying anyway!) but the message is, for the sake of your child’s cricketing future, buy for now and accept that last year’s bat is now this year’s favourite garden toy.

Of course, with the new expense comes the need to take care of the new kit. Our friends at Owzat Cricket not only offer great discounts but also great advice. Visit them at www.owzat-cricket.co.uk or give them a call on 0800 542 8711 and use the code OZFLAC10 to save 10%. Even better – visit them at their fantastic showroom just off the M1 junction 28 at DE55 2ER.

New national festival coming to Surrey promises to keep the whole family entertained this summer

goFest-reversedIt’s an unfortunate fact that the UK has a rapidly growing obesity problem affecting adults and children at all ages. As adults, you may find it tricky fitting sport or exercise into a hectic lifestyle. GoFest, the UK’s Family Festival of Sport, Fitness, Dance and Health has been designed specifically to tackle this. Coming to Surrey Sports Park, Guildford on 10-12 July 2015, the festival provides an opportunity to enjoy quality family time over an active and motivating three days of fun, sport, dance and entertainment to make the whole family feel good!

iStock_000008235598_Double50 sports and 25 varieties of dance and fitness classes and a range of various zones means GoFest is the perfect platform to come and have a Go at a range of activities… and you may even find you have a secret talent too!  With all day entertainment, you can soak in the festival vibes and enjoy live dance and music acts in the beautiful Surrey surroundings with your family from the moment you enter, until the moment you leave.

Say No to fizzy drinks! Thank you golfer Paul Lawrie.

_60473737_paul_lawrieAt Activate Sport we advocate leading an active and healthy lifestyle. In modern day living do we really understand what that means? As busy parents it is often easy to take the ‘short cut’ or ‘easy win’ when it comes to our children and what they ask for or need. How damaging can that be to their health and success?

On our Academies and camps we ask children to bring a refillable drinks bottle with them each day. We know they will get thirsty and we often work them hard to get thirsty! Our venues are chosen carefully to ensure we have access to water so that we can re-fill bottles throughout the day. We supply each course with no added sugar squash for some flavour if desired.

Paul LawrieWe have written blogs before about the damaging effects of fizzy drinks and it is easy to ‘treat’ our children or give them a can of coke to take with them. Do we realise the high levels of sugar in them and how damaging they can be? Activate Sport  encourage parents to bring a refillable drinks bottle so that this does not happen. Re-filling a can of coke with water just won’t work and it tends to go everywhere!

What has this got to do with Paul Lawrie? This weekend I read about Paul Lawrie and his addiction to cola. He suffered a slump in form when tried to quit his several litres a day addiction. He yo-yo’d from sugar highs to deep lows.

“I lost all confidence in myself. I wouldn’t say I went through a breakdown but I definitely got exceptionally emotional. It was very difficult to deal with all of the situations coming at me. Whether that had anything to do with my mental state in any shape or form, I have no idea.”

You can read the full article on the BBC website here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/golf/31478765

Thank you for speaking out Paul. Spreading the message is important by leading sporting role models and we wish you the best in returning to form. Cola free.

This weekend, my son requested water. Not squash, not juice, no fizz and “no ice Daddy – just water”. What a proud moment and all the more meaningful as it came from himself. This is what we mean by a healthy lifestyle…

Cricket World Cup 2015

2015_Cricket_World_Cup_Logo.svgThe Cricket World Cup is about to get underway down under. We are looking forward to the cricket calendar showpiece and have previewed the tournament’s potential stars and winners.

The last time Australia hosted the CWC was in 1992 and England were beaten in the final by Imran Khan’s Pakistan. Since then we have seen the emergence of new cricketing powers but we are hoping that England will go one better this time.

As hosts, Australia will start as favourites. They boast the deepest and most powerful batting line up with players who can take advantage of power play overs at the start and end of the innings. If there is any weakness it would appear to be in the spin bowling department but they have plenty of pace options to combat this. Their outstanding leader Michael Clarke is back and the team who beat Australia are likely to win the tournament.

brendon-mccullum-1407915041Co-hosts New Zealand should not be underestimated. They are in a fine run of form and they no longer rely solely on their superstar Brendan McCullum. They will slip under the radar of most opposition and will be looking to surprise a few all the way to the final.

The other fancied side is South Africa who always seem to under achieve at World Cups. Hashim Amla leads a strong batting unit and with Dale Steyn in the side there is firepower with the ball. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka come into the competition with little form and consistency and poor recent history in Australian conditions.

As always there are the ‘minnows’ to look out for creating shocks. Ireland lead the charge with Scotland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and the UAE also looking to make some history. Who can forget Kenya getting to the semi final in 1999 but surely this can’t happen again?

Players to look out for:

277273-deAB De Villiers (South Africa) recently scored the quickest ODI hundred of all time as he put the West Indies to the sword. His brutal knock of 149 was off 44 balls and he brought up his hundred in just 31 deliveries.

Darren Sammy (West Indies) is one of the most dangerous hitters in the last few overs of an innings. If he gets hold of the ball then even the biggest grounds are nowhere near big enough! He has been known to have strike rates in excess of 300 per 100 balls!

887889-0f970460-7c1b-11e3-897f-d21e3ddd1df9Aaron Finch & David Warner (Australia) open the batting and are a very dangerous combination. Both men are short in stature but very powerful and capable of hitting the ball a long way from the first ball. Whether setting or chasing they will attack and look to take the game from the opposition very quickly.

Kumar Sangakarra (Sri Lanka) is in the twilight of his career but is one of the highest run scorers in the history of international cricket. Sri Lanka have often struggled in Australian conditions but ‘Sanga’ had no problem in 2008 when he put the Aussie bowlers to the sword.

Jos-Buttler-of-England-scoops-the-ball-for-a-boundary-during-the-4th-Royal-London-One-Day-International-match-between-England-80Jos Buttler (England) is a fearless middle order batsman keeper who has taken the gloves in all 3 formats for England now due to Matt Prior’s injury. Dynamic does not even come close to describing Jos with the bat in his hands and he is capable of hitting to all parts of the ground. On top of this, his work behind the stumps is improving all the time and if England are to go a long way in the competition they will be looking for key contributions from Jos.

The AFCA Head Office pick as a player to look out for is Kane Williamson. The New Zealander is in a purple patch with the bat and is as reliable as anyone in world cricket right now. He is also a dynamic fielder and is a dangerous partnership breaker with his off-spin (ICC ruling allowing!).

How do we rate England’s chances?

There is a growing positivity about England’s ODI side. Peter Moores has been making excellent progress with the squad in all disciplines and we rate England’s chances as ‘quietly confident’. Despite potential unrest after Alistair Cook was replaced as captain only a few months ago, the new faces in the team have brought an energy and belief with them. Credit must go to selectors for finally picking James Taylor who has looked in imperious form at number 3, taking his domestic form onto the world stage.

What England will need is for their new skipper Eoin Morgan to return to form. He is a cool customer under pressure and his temperament will be needed with the bat as well as in the field with his captaincy decisions. The new ball pairing of Anderson and Broad is strong and Moeen Ali has shown that he has a lot to offer at the top of the order as well as being a front line spinner.

Good luck England!
